Solar Panel Manufacturers in China: Bulk Sourcing for German ImportersIMEX official logo

Buying from solar panel manufacturers in China is not simply a search for the lowest price per watt. For German importers, the better purchase is a shipment of traceable, compliant modules that customers can actually install, with delivery terms and warranty support that make commercial sense.

An inexpensive module can become costly inventory if its dimensions do not suit residential roofs, its electrical characteristics exceed inverter limits, or its documentation does not match the delivered model. This guide explains how to compare wholesale solar panels on a usable, saleable basis and turn the comparison into a purchase-ready order.

Define the purchase requirement before requesting prices

Start with customer applications, not supplier stock lists. A module suitable for a ground-mounted project may be impractical for rooftop installers because of its size, weight or mounting requirements.

Owner and timing: Procurement should obtain written approval from sales and technical staff before issuing the RFQ.

    The purchasing specification should identify:

    • Intended applications: residential, commercial rooftop or ground-mounted projects.
    • Maximum module dimensions, weight and permitted frame configurations.
    • Required power range, efficiency, appearance and technology preferences.
    • Electrical limits of intended inverters and system components.
    • Mounting-system compatibility and site-specific load requirements.
    • Quantity in modules, pallets and total rated capacity.
    • Delivery location, required arrival window and unloading constraints.

Separate mandatory requirements from preferences. A lower-priced alternative is worth evaluating only when the technical team confirms that customers can use it without redesign or additional equipment.

Shortlist solar panel manufacturers in China by seller type

Factory-direct offers, authorized distribution stock and surplus inventory can all be commercially useful. However, they require different checks.

Manufacturers such as LONGi, JinkoSolar, Trina Solar and JA Solar can provide starting points for research. These names are not endorsements of any particular seller, model or offer. Verify the actual contracting entity and the proposed supply channel independently.

    Factory-direct supply

Confirm which legal entity accepts the order, which factory will produce the modules and whether the requested model remains in production. Ask about minimum quantities, manufacturing lead time and permitted substitutions.

A brand name on a quotation does not prove that the seller represents the manufacturer. Check company details and payment instructions through independently obtained contact channels.

    Authorized distributors

Request evidence of authorization covering the relevant products and territory. Confirm whether the manufacturer recognizes warranty claims from the German buyer through this channel.

Distributors may offer smaller quantities or available inventory, but ownership, storage conditions and model consistency still need verification.

    Surplus-stock sellers

Ask why the stock is available, when it was produced and whether it contains mixed models or power bins. Obtain serial-number records and evidence supporting authenticity and warranty eligibility.

Owner and timing: Procurement should complete seller verification before approving a deposit. Search results and marketplace listings are discovery tools, not evidence of authorization or production capability.

Compare equivalent modules, not headline wattage

Normalize each offer against the approved specification. Higher rated power does not automatically mean more useful output per roof or an easier installation.

    Dimensions, efficiency and handling

Compare module efficiency alongside external dimensions. Two modules with different wattages may use roof area differently, affecting layout, access clearances and the number of modules that fit.

Check weight, frame depth, clamp zones, cable length and junction-box position against installation requirements. Confirm pallet dimensions and gross weight with the receiving warehouse before ordering.

    Electrical and temperature compatibility

Your technical reviewer should check open-circuit voltage, operating voltage, short-circuit current and operating current against the intended inverter and string design.

Use the relevant temperature coefficients and project design temperatures to assess cold-weather voltage and operating performance. Confirm connector manufacturers and types; do not assume different connectors can be safely intermated because their descriptions sound similar.

    Bifacial specifications

For bifacial modules, compare front-side ratings under the same test conditions. Review bifaciality and any stated rear-side assumptions separately.

Do not treat a supplier's illustrative bifacial gain as guaranteed project output. Rear-side performance depends on mounting geometry, shading and surrounding surfaces. The technical team should also account for potential additional current in system design.

Decision rule: Reject incompatible products before ranking prices. A cheap module that cannot serve the intended projects is not a saving.

Verify the exact model before paying a deposit

Documentation must identify the offered model precisely, including suffixes and construction variants. A certificate for a related product family is not sufficient unless its scope demonstrably covers the proposed module.

Owner and timing: The importer's compliance lead should approve the model-specific evidence pack before deposit payment, with specialist advice where necessary. Agree when shipment-specific records will be supplied and verify them before releasing the relevant payment milestone.

    Request and review:

    • The current datasheet and installation manual for the exact model.
    • Applicable declarations of conformity and required marking information.
    • Relevant test reports and certificates, including their model scope.
    • Label examples, required manufacturer and importer identification, and serial-number format.
    • Evidence linking production batches to the delivered serial numbers.
    • Warranty terms and the identity of the responsible warranty provider.
    • Required German-language instructions and safety information.

IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 documentation can support assessment of module qualification and safety. These documents do not, by themselves, establish compliance with every applicable EU or German requirement.

Verify certificate authenticity with the issuing organization where possible. Check whether model construction, manufacturing location and report scope align with the proposed goods.

Determine the importer's obligations under applicable EU product rules and German requirements before placing products on the market. Assess electrical-equipment obligations under Germany's ElektroG and packaging obligations under the Verpackungsgesetz, including the responsible producer, required registrations and any applicable system-participation duties. Do not assume a supplier's overseas registration or general assurance covers the German importer.

Build a landed-cost comparison for Germany

When importing solar panels from China to Germany, compare offers using the same product specification, delivery scope and tax treatment.

    Confirm classification and current measures

The solar panel HS code must be checked against the actual product. Photovoltaic cells assembled into modules or panels and cells not assembled into modules or panels have different tariff classifications; products incorporating other functions may require further analysis.

Owner and timing: The importer should have its customs broker confirm the current EU classification and applicable measures before signing, then recheck before customs declaration. Use the relevant EU TARIC information rather than relying solely on the exporter's code.

Confirm origin, customs value, duty treatment, import VAT handling and any applicable trade measures. Where classification is uncertain and commercially significant, consider seeking binding tariff information.

    Normalize delivery and handling costs

Specify the Incoterms rule, version and precise named place or port. FCA, FOB, CIF and DAP quotations do not cover the same costs or transfer risk at the same point. FOB and CIF are intended for sea or inland-waterway transport; select terms that fit the actual handover and transport arrangement.

    The cost sheet should include:

    • Module purchase price and agreed quantity tolerances.
    • Origin handling, freight and cargo insurance.
    • Destination charges, customs clearance and inland delivery.
    • Applicable duties and non-recoverable taxes.
    • Inspection, unloading, storage and financing costs.
    • A documented allowance for breakage and other non-saleable units.

Have finance or a tax adviser confirm the applicable import VAT treatment and any recovery entitlement. Separate recoverable import VAT from permanent cost while accounting for its cash-flow effect. Confirm insurance terms, exclusions, deductibles and claims evidence; insured freight does not guarantee recovery for every type of module damage.

For decision-making, divide the comparable landed cost by expected saleable watts, using an explicit assumption for non-saleable units. Keep unproven bifacial yield assumptions out of that denominator.

Agree inspection and warranty terms before signing

Quality expectations need contractual acceptance criteria, not informal promises.

Owner and timing: Procurement and quality staff should agree the inspection plan before the purchase order is signed. Legal counsel should review material warranty and dispute provisions before commitment.

Specify independent inspection rights, sampling methods and acceptance criteria. Depending on the order's risk, checks may include visual inspection, dimensional verification, flash-test data review and electroluminescence testing under an agreed method.

Define acceptable and unacceptable defects, including glass damage, frame deformation, labeling errors and electrical non-conformities. Require serial-number reconciliation between the inspection record, packing list and shipment.

Agree what happens when inspection fails: rework, replacement, reinspection, cancellation or another defined remedy. Tie payment milestones to agreed evidence and acceptance steps. The receiving warehouse should document delivery condition promptly and preserve evidence within the contractual and insurance claim deadlines.

    Make warranty support commercially usable

Separate product-defect coverage from performance guarantees. Confirm the claim procedure, evidence requirements, response deadlines and available remedies. For performance claims, agree the measurement method and treatment of testing uncertainty.

Identify who pays for testing, removal, replacement transport, reinstallation and disposal. Clarify the warranty provider's legal identity, governing law and dispute mechanism, and obtain advice on practical enforceability. Distinguish the manufacturer's warranty from the seller's contractual obligations and the importer's responsibilities to its own customers.

A long warranty period has limited value if the buyer cannot establish eligibility or obtain a commercially useful remedy.

    Send a purchase-ready RFQ

A bulk purchase becomes easier to evaluate when every bidder answers the same questions. Ask suppliers to quote a defined model and disclose exceptions rather than proposing unspecified equivalents.

    Your RFQ should request:

    • Exact model, power bin, dimensions and electrical specifications.
    • Required documents, labels and warranty terms.
    • Module count per pallet, pallet dimensions and loading plan.
    • Production dates or proposed production window, plus stock location.
    • Serial-number availability and batch-traceability records.
    • Price, currency, quotation validity and payment milestones.
    • Incoterms rule, version, named place or port, and delivery commitments.
    • Inspection rights, acceptance criteria and remedies.
    • Explicit approval requirements for any substitution.

Owner and timing: Procurement should issue this template after technical approval, resolve exceptions before supplier selection and incorporate accepted commitments into the contract. Do not leave critical requirements in disconnected sales messages.

    Frequently asked questions

Is factory-direct sourcing always the best option?

No. Factory-direct supply may suit repeat volume orders, while an authorized distributor may better serve smaller quantities or urgent demand. Compare traceability, availability, total cost and recognized warranty access, not seller type alone.

What should German importers check before paying a deposit?

Verify the seller, exact model, project compatibility, model-specific compliance evidence and warranty eligibility. Agree inspection rights, acceptance criteria, payment milestones, shipment-document deadlines and remedies before transferring funds.

How do I confirm the correct solar panel HS code?

Have a customs broker assess the exact product against the current EU tariff nomenclature and TARIC measures. Do not assume the supplier's export classification is sufficient for German import clearance.

Why compare landed cost per saleable watt?

Invoice price per watt excludes logistics, handling and potentially non-saleable stock. A consistent landed-cost calculation makes offers more comparable, but only after each module passes technical and compliance checks.
